The whaleback steamers of this period had a similar hull shape, sort of a cigar cut in half. A very interesting time for ship design. Some of the most interesting looking ships were built during this period.




"The Christopher Columbus entered service in 1893 to provide transportation to the World's Fair Colombian Exhibition in Chicago. She was the one and only whaleback passenger ship ever built. She carried over 500,000 passengers during her 43 year career." (source: Lake Erie Islands Historical Society) Anyone up for a paper model of this beauty?
