I haven't read about the FACs in Vietnam, but a great book titled "The Ravens" tells the account of "sheep dipping" Air Force pilots into the "Steve Canyon" program to fly as FACs in Laos. Incredible book written by Christopher Robbins.
These pilots went way beyond normal Air Force duties.
Yes, at the end we find out once again how we betrayed our Allies, letting them be murdered to save our "face".
