Actually it is NATO who refers to these aircraft as SU. The Russians list it Cyxon as in Cy-27. I would guess it is pronounced close to "sukhoi" and this is why it is spelled this way here on the west side of the globe. Ironically, the Russian company has it spelled this way right on their main hanger.

The fighter in question is technically listed as T-50 PAK-FA. And is Russia's first, generation 5.0 stealth fighter.
