Hi Robert,
For the truss you could try and find a transparent PVC tube. And perhaps you could even try and modify the inner structure of the outer truss parts to let them rotate around that tube instead of weaker pivoting platforms inbetween the segments. For instance, if you make those #5 and #6 truss parts with a tight rolled paper end on both sides, they might be able to rotate freely around the PVC tube inside.
The solar panels could be reinforced by one long rod which bends over and halfway round the tube to the other side so it stays one strong piece.

The PMA between the US part and the Russian part makes the station parts indeed different in height but you might be able to connect the two by using a smaller rod which protrudes through the airlock part of the PMA into both sections. The two tubes in which it ends could have inner circles through which that rod will go and keeps the two parts together.

(This might not all be as clear as I hoped it to be...I could make a small drawing of it if you want to..)
