I use Titebond II carpenter's glue made by Franklin International of Columbus, Ohio USA (liberated from the shop in my garage). It is a PVA type (no fumes), doesn't dry clear (slight yellowish tinge so apply carefully with the tip of a toothpick), tacks up solid in 10-15 seconds (no clamping needed), and effectively dries in minutes on paper/card (no waiting overnight for the glue to dry, just keep building).

Any yellow carpenter's glue should perform similarly.

NOTE - I do use glue sticks for laminating large areas if needed, but that's the only time I use them.
