I just saw an old train steam engine, and even on that, the rivets were very small. If I'd have to guess, they would be half a centimeter tall on a 6-meters long engine plus tender. On the other side, the nuts and bolts used to secure the bell were very proeminent indeed.
And planes were quite a bit more streamlined than a 20-miles per hour train engine, so I'd assume on a plane they would be much less visible (flush heads on the outside and so on).

But this thread is very interesting, and I've learned things not directly connected to the plane nonetheless. And I can't wait for the simple model I've voted for
