The bombs themselves were designed to fit inside the existing B-29 fuselage, and it was the bomb mounting mechanisms that were modified.
Both Little Boy and Fat Man are the same length overall. It's just amazing that they were able to do so!
I've been inside Enola Gay, and somewhere I have photos of the interior bomb bay, and the bomb mount was a decidedly Rube Goldberg looking affair. The one inside Bock's Car is even more "curiouser" looking. When I was stationed at Wright Patt, my best friend was the Director of Operations at the museum. I had unlimited access to all of the airplanes and took full advantage of it! It was a ball.
I've been inside the wing of a B-36 looking at the engine spaces. Unfortunately, I never photographed that!
