Here is where I am today.
This is a screen shot of a draft version of the PDF file, with details, the appropriate colors, and the texture of the spray sealant on the polar cap.
It was hard to achieve this result and I did many attempts before I could reach this result. I used Gimp in combination with Inkscape, and the PDF file isn't completly vectored, but at 400% of magnification (it's for you Charles if You would give a brother at your LB ) the graphic resolution is still good enough.

I tought at this solution but my major concern are the boundaries. I used a darker shade of yellow for underline the boundaries without underline too much the seal between two adiacent rings (look at the prototype with the boundaries black
). If I do a blank version I would put the boundaries out of the shape, to avoid that the shade of color of the paper could be too near at the color of the boundaries, making them hardly visible.
However I have to terminate the colored version and than I will can consider the blank one
