I simply color the elements in word using RGB codes found on the internet. I normaly color without gradients unless it adds to the realism. You can also use patterns in Word, like the one (hammered metal) I used for the nose of the Spirit of Saint Louis. (picture is not very good).

On rare occasions I use Gimp for airbrush style schemes and I place the obtained image behind the Word elements. Not the most fancy method, but it works fine for me.

I tried Open office but had a problem with the "arc" objects so I stayed with MS Word.
