Yes Leif, that method of production applied to many of the U.S. combat aircraft in WW2 with various manufacturers assembling the 1:1 scale "kits." If I remember correctly there were actually instances of a competitor being assigned to assemble another builder's aircraft. I think this applied to either Boeing or Consolidated having to build the other's bomber. I used to have all those block designators and sub-contractors memorized - too many years have gone by and too much brain dust.
