For those inkleined...
1) You get a single loop, half as wide and twice as long with a full twist.
2) You get two loops, half as wide again, the same length as 1) each with a full twist and interlinked.
And the last question... Yes you can and in theory, with one condition, it is possible whatever the ratio of the sides. See attachment.
