Time for an update.
The cabin is almost done, I just need to add the blue flash lights on the cabin's roof, the search lights and the hinges for the windows and hatches. They apparently are able to open and close. In the instructions there isn't a good drawing on how to use the parts for the hinges but I am trying to figure thet out. while I ponder over how to make that work, I started on the frame of chassis, if you will. Lots of small parts, a couple of big ones and again an ingenious way to put them all together into a sturdy construction.
I just spotted one thing which was not correct, at least not for the 'crane' version I am building. The engine cover of the crew cabin Zil, the 49061, has a sloped part to keep an access to the door in the cabin's front. But the 4906 crane doesn't need that and its engine cover even is stepped, I found out looking at the collected pictures in my files. I redesigned the engine cover for the crane and well, this is where I am now.
An almost finished chassis and lots of extra callus on my left index finger from cutting all that reinforced card for the chassis.
