there is a side view of the mast step in the plans, but nothing to say how wide it is

the best reference i can find is in the Wittsen book, and looks like it should be more or less square

i fitted the first two cross pieces (and thinned them down a little, since they are rectangular), then i cut away the jig

i found the distances for the uprights that support the cross beams, and used the plan pieces to mark their locations
