Took me a while to figure out how the cotton bud/Q-Tip fit into the project.
Looks like they expect the cotton bud with the small hollow plastic tube rather than the rolled paper stick I'm used to.
Point is, after you trim a little insulation off the end of the wire, you fold the exposed wire strands back over the remaining insulation. Then you use the hollow plastic tube to hold it. This makes it easier to push the drawing pin/thumbtack inside the wire insulation for contact. I think a little tape could work if you cannot find cotton buds with the plastic tubing.
