Yes indeed, a terrifying picture. B-17G Wee Willie was shot down over Stendal in Germany on April 8th, 1945, due to a direct FLAK hit at the port wing root. Out of a crew of nine, only the pilot survived. The aircraft was one of the last bombers to be shot down. Sad story.
Just after this picture was taken the aircraft exploded before hitting the ground. The picture is part of a sequence.
To consider Wee Willie as model option would be a great tribute.
