I did five Mediterranean deployments aboard
Ponce with the
Sumter at our side.
My second(?) cruise, our group got caught a MASSIVE gale while heading west towards the Pillars of Hercules (Strait of Gibraltar) and we were worried we were going to lose
Sumter.
With fifty-plus foot high waves, that little LST would disappear into a trough for minutes on end. They should have gotten sub pay for that cruise!
