There are ways to get around the warping issue without having to rely on formers or spars. A small strip of aluminum sheeting might have helped to correct the issue. I use it extensively in almost all my wings, control surfaces and especially on my larger scale builds such as the 1/18th SR-71 whether I roll the wings or use formers. It goes a long way towards giving the thinner can surface some rigidity it would not normally have. If this a resource available to you, it is one worth investigating IMO...
The different colors do add to the finer details. I use this technique as well by keeping strips of solid colored can available. I have cataloged solid panels of black, blue, white, red and yellow and when I need an added dash of color such as this, I just affix that color can where it is needed. That might be a technique to investigate, should you have the resources available to do so. I've never been a fan of painting cans especially given its propensity to scrape right off if not sealed with a dull or gloss coat over it, so I opt for solid colored can in these instances...
