I mentioned this thread to someone who is knowledgeable about the postal industry and got an interesting response!

Something he explained which had not occurred to me is that at the borders - and here we are talking about the customs mainly - handling procedures have fallen behind the times.

In essence technology and its use in tracking, now means that items require scanning at the various points of entry - the scanning also needs to be backed up by the appropriate hardware and software.

But because postal service processing now tends to get put on the back burner when it comes to finances and budgets, the handling of goods has been dramatically affected due to a shortage of up to date technology, scanning devices, automated handling equipment etc..

He advised that in many first world countries now, the time needed to process packages and parcels through at Point of Entry, mainly for the reasons mentioned above, range from 5 to 30 working days.

This is before the goods are then handed over to local PO or carriers.

Those of you who are curious can maybe do a "Request for Information" based on the above and find out in reality what the Point of Entry delay is.....
