It is hard to tell the circuit just by looking at it, but it *looks* like you have your LEDs in parallel, hooked up to the 4xAA in series? Or are the AAs hooked up in parallel too? I can't see any current limiting resistors either...
Without more information I'd have to agree, this could be dangerous: I think you may be risking a fire from the batteries.
Can you post the schematic of the electrical wiring?
