Prior to 1948, the F designator in the USAAF/USAF system was for photo-reconnaissance planes.
The F-4 and F-5 were recon variants of the P-38 (why 2 distinct designations?). The F-6 was the recon variant of the P-51 Mustang, the F-7 was the recon variant of the B-24 Liberator, the first F-15A was the photo-recon variant of the P-61 Black Widow. That one lasted long enough to be redesignated as RF-61C (when the P-61 became F-61).
