In 1939 an example of the ST-A was procured by the USAAC for evaluation as the XPT-16. This was followed by an order for 15 YPT-16's which was one of a number of firsts for the little Ryan- she was actually the first monoplane trainer ordered by the USAAC. The PT-16's were the first of more than a 1,000 ST's that would serve the USAAC , USAAF and the USN.
