Very typical of the British pre-war airforce. My dad, who was born in 1928 remembered them from some contemporary aviation mags and he called it a "flying cuckoo clock" or a "flying flower stool".
At the same time he was a fan of the Supermarine Walrus which showed approximately the same "aerodynamic refinement"...
