Don and Yeti - thank you for also your comments also in the historical information. It makes bashing it out worth the effort!

Yeti - yes the scale is close to Z gauge. If I am happy with the eventual outcome I may invest in the Preiser Z unpainted railway figure pack (88500) and make a small diorama - which is how I like to display my models, even if the diorama is very simple with one or two figures. I do not think the difference in scale will be that noticeable, especially as people vary in height!
