Added the little pipes and connectors to the front face place.
This was an exercise in frustration. No matter what I did, the pipes never looked acceptable, until I realised I had to move the backing plane (behind the shoulder plates and face plate) *back*, to create a but of space behind the front facing plates to insert the pipes into.
Now they look ok to me:
