Oops...SNAFU central, here...
I figured out, after making sure everything was nicely cemented and dry, that I had the breach piece attachment flipped! The part with the aluminum tubing was supposed to be in the forward section. D'oh!
I was able to cut things apart and flip it...now all is right with the world.
