I am always learning new things in the Forum. Until I read Pericles' response to John,I did not know that the three S-40s were turned over to the U.S. Navy. I see from the Wiki article on the S-40 that they were used for four-engine training until they were scrapped in 1943.
I must dig our my old issues of The American Aviation Historical Society Journal, which in the Winter 2006 issue reprinted an October 1931 Aviation article on the S-40 with some excellent additional images and Skyways, which October 2006 [good year for S-40 articles] ran a well-illustrated article on the S-40.
