Hi All,

It was very interesting to see the cased model of the HTMS Matchanu in the thaigunship blog. There is a brass fitting at the bow that appears to made up of three elongated footballs. These are the Y-Tubes, and were an early underwater location device. The difference in time a sound would take to reach the three receivers would give an indication to the direction of the sound. At least this is how it was explained to me by my old neighbor, Dean Varner. He served aboard the R-12, one of the first group of U.S. submarines to cross the Pacific and take up station at Pearl Harbor.

In the attached photograph, note the Y-Tubes at the bow of Dean's boat, the R-12. It's interesting that such a device should appear on a Thai boat.
