I have an APC backup and it is very busy in the summer dealing with brownouts, and momentary power outages (when there are lightening storms and everyone is running their air conditioner), which it prevents from getting through to my PC, and hopefully prolonging its life and protecting the data I have on its HDs. I think that is the biggest value of an APC is being a power conditioner.

You might also consider an inexpensive laptop hooked up to your monitor and both plugged in through a decent quality surge protector. The laptop will keep running through power outages and brown outs, and the surge protector should keep them from getting fried by a power spike, though the monitor will go down during a severe brown out or total power outage.I learned the hard way that it is a good idea to use surge protectors with all my electronics.
