Regarding the questions,
@ Butelczynski - I don't think this type used flares for illumination. Usually it was done by floatplanes from battlships or cruisers. From 1942/43 the US Navy's radar was developed enough to use it for long range targeting, at list at sea battles.
@ Falco - Don't see any masking tape, can you mark it?
