The crusader at the time was the better dogfighter imo. she could launch sidewinders and had the 20 mm canon. the canon however jammed when subjected to some vigorous turning dogfight maneuvers but when it came down to knife fight in a phone booth the gun armed crusader usually faired better than the f4. chance vought had numerous upgrades planned for the crusader but by then the phantom was firmly entrenched thus the F8 became the "last of the gunfighters" for the navy.
