If this is a Tintype picture (and I think it is), The way a Tintype camera works is the photo is inverted and mirrored by the lens (as shown below). The photographer would know this and probably had the background painted backwards to compensate for this. However, he could do nothing for the auto, or the people's clothing. This is just my thoughts, I could be wrong.
