F-100 Super Sabre in Vietnam war

The F-100 started the Vietnam war from the very beginning.
At first it was even served on a cap missions for the f-105 thuds
but was not successful at this type of mission and handed this mission
to the much more capable f-4 Phantom.
Also, when compared to the Thud it was not looking good either. The Thud
could carry twice the bomb load faster and farther than the Hun.
So , the f-105 was the main bomber over north Vietnam while the f-100
flew bombing missions over south Vietnam.
The f-100 served as a flying artillery over the jungles of south Vietnam carrying
napalm bombs, conventional bombs, rockets and also used the 4x 20 mm guns for strafing all kind of targets. It helped very much to the american ground
forces by bombing Vietcong targets in the jungles and flew more missions than
the B-17 flew over Europe in WW2 !
At a later stages of the rolling thunder ( 1965-1968 ) there was a need for reinforcement and national guards of f-100 squadrons came over from the US
to participate and help in south Vietnam.
The two seater f-100 f served at s certain point on a Wild Weasel missions against the SAM- 2 ground to air missiles but also here handed this mission
to the F-105 f two seaters that were better equipped for this dangerous type of mission.
Over 250 F-100 were lost in Vietnam, but if we put into accost the number
of sorties performed by them then the rate of loose is not high.
Toward 1970 most of the f-100 were phased out of the war theater in favor of the f-4 phantoms.
As an interceptor the f-100 was not successful and only credited with 1
mig -17 kill - but the chance to meet a Mig over south Vietnam was slim.
Included f-100 photos.
