The Sabre Dog D was really modified from a conventional first generation F-86 as a radar equipped bomber interceptor. Hence the rockets carried under the belly. I don't think it needed to go too fast or be maneuverable to intercept bombers. Also, it was never intended as a fighter bomber and thus external load was light.
We have great looking example here at the Air Force museum in Dayton where I volunteer ( my volunteering is on pause until the pandemic is over and I feel comfortable to return ).
Can you see the rocket tray on the bottom?
and I did get to see a beautiful Hunter in Singapore a few years back.
In any case it was one of the early NATO allies fighter jets along with the F-84F
