Number 4 - Boeing Model 256

The acquisition of these planes by the Getúlio Vargas government represented a leap in quality for Naval Aviation and Av. Militar, as they were purchased for the 1932 conflict against the revolting Paulistas. (Constituncionalist Revolt of 1932)

During this civil war, the incapacity of our armed forces in aerial combat became apparent, operating with inadequate or obsolete types (such as the Vought O2U Corsair fighter vector from Naval Aviation or the Nieuport Delage NiD-72C-1 from Aviação Militar) , considering the Navy's loyalty to the government during the 1932 revolution, the Getúlio Vargas president management bought a lot of Model 256 directly from the Boeing factory (identical to the US Navy's Boeing F4B4, the latest production version). The acquisition of these planes was justified by the Constituncionalist Revolution and the development of events between Bolivia and Paraguay that culminated in the Chaco War.

Luckily for the rebels, these planes did not arrive in time to participate in the conflict, being subsequently divided between Naval Aviation and Army Aviation, generating a rift between the two forces that still exists today with the "heiress" FAB. Thus, of the 14 copies ordered in the USA, eight went to the Army and the others to Av. Naval. These machines were registered in the Navy from C1B-33 to C1B-38, and the designation in the Navy of the type was C1B (C = Fighter 1 = 1st model B = Boeing), the Navy F4B4 were all based at the Galeão Air Base from 1932 to 1941. Except for a few months in 1932/33 when they were based in Ladário patrolling the border of Brazil and Paraguay due to the Chaco War.

Thanks to the acrobatic skills of the F4B4, the Brazilianm Navy set up a small air demonstration squadron. Equipped with three aircraft, piloted by Capt. Corvette Djalma Fontes Cordovil Petit, Captain-Lieutenant Lauro Oriano Menescal and Captain-Lieutenant José Kalh Filho. This flight soon drew attention for the maneuvers carried out, and in some cases the planes were attached by ropes !!!

The squadron flight gained public notoriety with tours in Argentina and Uruguay, and in the first country the impact of the presentations was so overwhelming, that the Argentine congress approved the modernization plan
of the Air Force of the Argentine Army and the Navy of that country. The "squadron" also escorted President Vargas' Lockheed L-12 Electra on his travels, is one of first top government leaders to use in full scale the aviation of full way of transportation, as well as the great Graff Zeppelin airship upon his arrival in the Rio de Janeiro in 1937. The remaining two aircraft of the Navy were passed to the FAB in 1941.
