Gokstad wiking ship / scratch / 1:48

After building failure with Gokstad ship from WAK, caused by me and my errors only, I decided that since I am starting over I will do scratch build.

I did 3d model based on archeological sources:

Comparison of plank distribution with original ship:

Comparison with 3d scan of original ship:

Recently I find out, that ship displayed in museum probably do not match the shape of the ship in its duty years due to archeologists interpretation, wood shrinkage and 1000 year in ground. So my effort to have the ship as close as possible to it to acquire real shape of the ship is qestionable.

I also used my 3d model to do some tests of possible rowing positions of the crew. There are theories that they sat on deck frame instead of the chests so I want to see how it would work:

I layered the keel, stem and stern in a way it would make tapered shapes identical with the original and then covered by the outer skin parts:

I made a tool from a needles for making the carvings around the edges:

Skelet is assembled and false deck instaled to make everything stable and square:

Visible ribs assembled and testpainted to see if carvings will be even noticeable:

Jig is ready:

Planking template ready to be printed and first plank finaly on its place:
