The photographs of Prof. Thaddeus Lowe's balloon operations in the Civil War were taken by Matthew Brady (or his assistants). There is a sequence of about half a dozen showing the operation. Prof. Lowe also scored a first in sending Lincoln the first telegraph message from an aerial conveyance.
