A technical note : The Mig-17 had an afterburner ( or Reheat in British English ). This was an improvement over the Mig-15 which had a straight exhaust.

An afterburner is a simple devise inserted in the exhaust duct of a jet engine that introduces added fuel vapor which is ignited again and when lit, the exhaust gasses expand rapidly aft and produce an apposing thrust of an added 30-50% more thrust for short duration ( usually take off when heavy, or escape during combat ) There is also the addition of an exhaust variable area devise such as petals .
