Hub motors make sense. Especially with with the possible advances in battery tech available in that time frame.

I doubt it would be relying on batteries at that point, more likely some form of small fusion power source...I think these are referred (but not in the context of the APC) at some stage in the Aliens saga, possibly the books if not one of the 4 movies...

True, batteries alone are not very reliable, but with that power source you mentioned built in into the dropship for example, "refuelling" would be fast and easy (as long as the dropship isn´t beeing destroyed yet...) - but I can't imagine a fusion reactor built in a small APC, that'll be too much, i think...

I always thought it was a little low-slung for an APC. No clearance. But it looked cool.

At the very least it would be an advanced fuel cell. Plastics and pharmaceutical s would be the main uses for petrochemicals.
The Nostromo WAS hauling a refinery for cripes sake!
As with whatever power source is used the hub mothers would be advanced from what is available today.

I have the distinct impression that the APC seen in the original film was not the only armored personnel carrier in the Colonial Marines inventory, likely the low slung-urban friendly design was intentionally sent to LV-426 because of the colony's paved infrastructure.
