Large-scale Imperial warships

Hey there!

I've admired the models from the X-wing Alliance Upgrade project for a long time, and for almost an equal amount of time I've wanted to turn them into paper models. Now, thanks to Blaar, I have the raw models at my disposal! While I was at it, I figured, why not create a scale fleet of them?

I needed to scale them to the largest model, the Imperial II Star Destroyer, because that would ensure they'd fit on Letter-size paper (you guys across the pond will be able to print your ships bigger than us, so it's a plus factor for you that I am using Letter size paper).

Since I am scaling the fleet to the Imperial Star Destroyer, I decided to start with it. There are some problems with the raw model. For one thing, apart from the fact that the tractor beam targetting array is flat, theres zero difference between this model and the ISD1 model, so that had to be fixed. I can't texture worth a darn, so I couldn't make new turrets, or any other new parts for that matter, but I could delete the big side turrets in the trench notches as well as the flaps around the engines. I also stretched the hull so it's proportions would match the ISD2 from The Empire Strikes Back. The textures do match the first version of the ship, but the new look will better distinguish it from the old one.

I've scaled the model to 1:2700, the maximum size, which translates to 60 centimeters, or 23.6 inches. Should be a good size for a shelf unit.

Here's a picture of the development:

Here's the other ships on the list:

Imperial I Star Destroyer:

Victory I Star Destroyer:

Victory II Star Destroyer:

Strike Cruiser:

Immobilizer-418 "Interdictor" cruiser:

Escort Carrier:

Dreadnaught:

Nebulon-B Frigate:

Nebulon-B2 Frigate:

Carrack Cruiser:

Lancer Frigate:

Assassin-class Corvette:

The corvette will be the smallest model, and will translate to about 2.1 inches. Sounds small, but if I leave off the fiddly bits like the laser cannons, or else replace them with a flat piece, it will be buildable. At least you can skip them if you can't build that small, or else get the free version of Pepakura Designer and upsize it to your preferred dimensions.

If this project lasts long enough, I might be willing to do the Rebel ships.

A very interesting idea! One that may become extremely popular, also!

Thanks guys!

I've got the Victory I Star Destroyer done. I would have gotten the ImpStarI first, but I kept getting deja' vu and burning out because, well, I'd done all that before. The VSD II will be easier, because it's significantly different from the VSDI.

There are a few intersections in these models, by the way, such as the secondary engines, but since they're easily trimmed to fit I'm not going to buy the full version of Meta just for that. I might have to if I ever get to the starfighters, though. There are a lot of intersecting parts on the fighters that would make assembly difficult and which are crucial to the look of the ship.

Anyway, here's a picture of the finished development:

Finished size is about 33.3 cm/13.1 in long. Plenty big, IMO. :thumb:

I probably should go ahead and finish the other Imperial Star Destroyer before I continue, though. If I don't get it done now it may never get done, and being a completist, I'd never get around to releasing it if I didn't.

Always liked the interdictor and its role. Never seen the nebulon b2 before. Is that a unused XWA design?

Nope. It's from the game TIE Fighter, and has been in every X-wing product since. It's a smaller, but more vicious, variant of the Nebulon-B Frigate. It's quite dangerous in the games because it's geared more towards anti-starfighter ops than the Nebulon-B and it mounts a concussion missile launcher.

But the biggest anti-starfighter threat is the Lancer frigate. In the X-wing novel serie it is described as having 20 quad laser cannons, the same as on the MF. It was a serious threat, but not for 23 proton torps... That were chasing a single X-wing.

If you do get to the Dreadnaught class, will there be a Katana fleet variant texture, even though it will be murder on ink cartridges?

Quite right about the Lancer; those are worse than the B2.

I don't think so. All I could find in the texture variations was a blank, Rebel, Imperial, and Black Sun variants. No Katana Fleet, probably because it doesn't appear in X-wing Alliance.

Your large capitol scale ships are coming along real great! can't wait to see the end results.. Any chances of doing a Venator class in large scale, would make one heck of an awsome centerpiece/objective for our SW TCG game that my osns and I play..
