I never did get to see the movie.
The one night it was on tv about 20 years ago, the then missus insisted on seeing some ridiculous piece of fluffy garbage about "fashion week", and consequently the opportunity was lost.

However: that said, sure as hell once I find a decent dvd to rent, I'll see the movie.
I certainly like the look of Uhu's model, it captures the original very well indeed.
I'm looking forward to seeing your build emerge, Neptune my friend, it might encourage me to try to obtain the model.
I've held-off getting it because my skills are nowhere near enough to do it justice as yet.

Kind and Respectful Regards my friends, Uyraell.

I was fortunate enough to meet Fritz Lang when I was in college at UCLA. They were showing the then longest existing version of Metropolis. The newly restored version is longer by 20 minutes and the order of the reels has been changed.

Lang was by then nearly blind and couldn't actually see the movie himself. At the end of the movie, before he answered questions, he stood on the podium and raised a clenched fist in solidarity with the students striking against the Vietnam War.

Metropolis is not so much pro-socialism as it is a call for the workers to be treated fairly by a compassionate techno/corporate elite. As the movie says, "The mediator between head and hands must be the heart."

Lang escaped from a totalitarian socialist state leaving his wife, an ardent Nazi, behind. But it wasn't the workers who put Hitler in power, it was a coalition of capitalists and militarists who thought they could control him and bring an end to the Weimar Republic's experiment in bourgeois democracy.

Socialism, like Shakespeare, is not the problem. It's on whose behalf it's used. There is another German movie, Mephisto, which makes it all very clear.

Wow! Really? Socialism never works as evident by all of the nations that have given it up for a form of capitalism. The only countrys that still practice socialist type of government are run by despots, ie North Korea, Venezuela and so on. Every time a country starts down the socialist road the country becomes bankrupt. Look at the current experiment being played out in the United States, by the Teleprompter in Chief. The economy is stagnate, the administration will not listen to the will of the people and instead continues to double down on technology that isn't as advanced as it should be, thorwing billions of dollars down the rabit hole, supporting bundlers that threw money into Obaba's campaign fund for 08. Even after the Dems were summarily trounced in 2010, they continue to attempt to force the green agenda while gas prices are on the rise again. The entire housing bubble was a result of social engineering that went ary, putting people into houses that they couldn't afford, while the SEC turned a blind eye to Bernie Madoff. Every time to Bush administration would attempt to reign in Sally Mae and Freddy Mac, Chris Dodd, Nancey Pelosi, Chuck Shummer and Barney Frank would pull out the race card, or attempt to paint the Bush administration with the broad brush that they are attempting to paint Romney with, that of the unfeeling plutocrat that just wanted to make the rich, richer and the poor poorer. I prefer the vision of Ronald Reagan's Shining City on the Hill as opposed to the Democratic view of America as that of the defiler of nations and the currupter of the righteous. I served my county for the better part of a decade and I've been all over the south china sea and have visited several countrys and have seen what hands of socialist despots have wrought. I'll take merit based capitalism over the fraud of socialism any day.

A few years ago there was a TV documentary about finding some scenes from Metropolis that have been missing for decades. There was a group dedicated to restoring the movie and including the scenes so the movie could be seen as near to the original release as possible. The restored Metropolis was shown after the documentary. When the video was bad here were notations explaining that the current scene was very degraded and what the viewer was watching was the best that the restorers could do with what was available.

I've seen that twice, it was on PBS here and it was a lengthy and detailed account of virtually every aspect of the film and everyone attached to it. I'd like to see someone do a frame by frame animation of the movie with the missing footage included in the animation and I mean NOT Anime, but something along the lines of what Ralph Backshee did with The Hobbit.

Just catching up. I'll communicate my defense of socialism to Mr. Neptune separately, so no problem there for me, either. In the meantime you might enjoy this website I found a long time ago. It's a walk-through of the city in Metropolis set to the points of the compass. Metropolis Walkthrough

I printed up two copies of this and wasn't happy with either one, so I'm going to get the whole thing printed on 11X17" card stock and go from there. I really wish I had access to the unlock .pdo of this model, the more I look at it, the more I would like to rework the entire unfold on this.

I finally got a little time to start updating these threads. I'll have to do McHales Akira Bridge next, then the aliens and liberty prime and so on, anyway, the camera's full and I have a few minutes to sit down, so here you go. I had to make some minor changes to the existing cut out pattern when I rescaled it three times. Adiitionally I'm planning on taking this to the next level as with a few other models. The last photo is a reference, showing a couple of changes that I need to make in addition to those already made.
