Anyone seen a paper model of a dome or sphere? Like a geodesic dome with the triangular facets.

Here is a website with dome calculators that let you input parameters to get the size dome you want.
Desert Domes - Home You can input the diameter of the dome wanted and it will return the lengths of the sides of the triangles needed, or you can input the length of one of the sides and it will return the needed length of the other sides and the resulting diameter of the dome. The calculator calls the sides "struts" because the intended use is to make electrical conduit struts for constructing geodesic domes. I have used the calculators to make domes using corrugated cardboard from appliance boxes and make domes with drinking straws and pipe cleaners. There are calculators for various types of domes from simple 1V to more complex 6V domes. The "V" designator is just geodesic dome terminology to indicate the complexity of the dome. I do not have pictures of the drinking straw dome, but here is a picture of one of the corrugated cardboard domes: It has a radius of around 32 inches/81 cm. If you look close you can see a hand sticking out of the dome.

This may not have exactly what you're seeking, but it's full of wonderful paper geometric shapes: Paper Models of Polyhedra
EDIT: Oops. I see someone beat me to this one. Never mind.

Thanks guys for all the help. These look good for the ideas I'm working on. I've found a few standard skylight patterns but this looks very promising and its giving me some new ideas. Maybe a glass dome with plants inside like a greenhouse for Poison Ivy from Batman. I think one of the dome patterns would also work for the Daily Planet globe if I double the dome and work out some extra parts so that it will look like a hollow framework of steel girders.
Thanks for the help. Clif |
