Tracked Patrol Machine, 1905

This cool little steampunk Tracked Patrol Machine can be found over at the French forum "Le Forum en Papier". The model is a free download. Here's the link if you're interested in this sort of thing: http://www.maquettes-papier.net/forumenpapier/topic4472.html

According to the designer, it is inspired by the works of visionary French author Jules Verne, and depicts a fantasy tracked vehicle that the British Army might have used in the Sudan in 1905. The model pictured at the download location is overall khaki with a union jack, (available upon written request to the designer). The actual download version is finished in a 3 color splinter camo scheme with red and white insignia. There is an instructions/parts list page, but it's not much help if you don't speak french. The model is @ 1/50th scale, but since I had to shrink the parts page to accomodate letter sized paper, it now scales out in the 1/54 - 1/56th range. It's a small model, measuring a mere 1.5 x 3.25 inches.

It's very well designed and weathered, and was a lot of fun to build. I embossed all the hull rivets, but they were already so 3D looking that you can only tell by touch. I doubled the doors, view ports etc to add a bit more dimension, and added a couple of wire grab handles. The blacked out areas in track/suspension cries out for a different treatment, but the designer is very explicit about not wanting the file modified in any way, so I left it alone. There are only 2 suspension parts #27 provided - you need 4. I also wound up at the end with a few unused parts, but I think this is due to different spotlight configurations.

On to the pics ------->

Very nice work Don. Really looks impressive. The ribets really look 3d. What do you use to cut the round parts of "Reservoir" ?

Thanks for the link.

Thanks, Alcides. By reservoir I think you mean the big drum of petrol on the back? Nothing special there. The discs on the ends are scissor cut. The body is a just a rolled tube, wrapped with a couple of strips. The kit is really nice. It includes all the hatches, etc needed for layering. I doubled mine for even more definition. I'm eyeing those Steampunk 'mechs over at the Toposolitario site www.toposolitario.com - Steam Mecha I can imagine the TPM and a steampunk mech displayed together as a vignette.

I put reservoir because that's the name on the model sheet where some names are in French Thanks for the answer.

Nice idea to a vignette.

While the instructions are in French, It would be better if there was a build sequence instead or an exploded view of where the parts are to be attached. For me it is very straight forward and do-able. I may make a build sequence for this little fella. If the members here know how I build things, It will be a bit more built up from the basic plans. As soon as I get done with the Galeon, I may tackle this one with a bunch of modifications. Great little model that is open for further enhancements. Thanks for sharing.

The kit is definitely worthy of better instructions. Paul, the designer (who also designed the excellent T-33 amphibious tank found at the maquettes papier site as well), is not too keen on folks modifying his models, though. I'd clear any proposed additions or changes with him before proceeding.

Nice build.
A cute little fellow and whilst attributed to 1905 it looks as if it would feel completely at home as one of the locally built tanks of the Spanish Civil War.

The modifications will be my own and not for download but I will show how I came about hose enhancements in my step by step methods. I have already broke apart the sections I needed from the plans. The track links will be individual and the road wheels and idlers will be single as well. I like the potential that this little fellow has.

I can't wait to see your enhancements to this little fantasy tank. As you say, there is lots of potential here to turn a good model into an amazing model. I'm glad my humble thread has spurred your creative juices.

I have started on this little guy but I will not do a build thread until I am almost done. The tracked section will be the dilemma but it is coming out great. See you all soon with my build thread.
