Fireball XL5 Continued
The LAUNCH RAIL had to be made from HARD TIMBER because the weight of the model although made from card and paper got quite heavy and 31" long. The Sled had to be quite sturdy too. This was my VERY first attempt at a scratch build guys.

Very timely, Peter, and very nice...I have been contemplating a build of the Pierre Fontaine XL-5 in paper for the current UAMF Blitzbau but hadn't really been thinking of a interior til now - will have to go away and dig out all those old moth-eaten TV21s and Countdowns for some references...

Peter, it is not obvious to me what materials you used, other than the hardwood for the railing. Is everything else card or paper?
Love for this subject inspires modelers to great efforts. I saw a beautiful XL-5 built largely of machined aluminum. |

I really don't know anything about the Anderson's, but I will say this a really impressive build! I do like the styling of this space ship. Well done!

Hi Davelant. Yes apart for wood on the launch rail she is almost all card and paper - the canopy is clear plastic from some packaging material - the re-fuel pipes and tanks are oddments left over from a plastic kit from many years ago. The Fuselage is very heavy weight card with the formers several thicknesses thicker to withstand the weight of the outer card. The rest is just 160 gsm with several laminations in places. Fireball's SLED is very heavy weight card stock and had to be balanced with weights to stop XL drooping onto the rail - She's over 30" long from main rocket gimbal to the nose of XL junior. The paint i used is car spray for the silver and model spray for the rest. Fireball XL5 is my favourite of the Gerry and Sylvia Anderson Productions when i was very young, and i still get a buzz watching the programmes now :D I have seen the model you mentioned and she is a beauty i wish she was mine. Hope this all helps you friend
