Beta-test build ( Normandy SR2 )

Hey everybody, i'm new here on Paper Model & i want to show / help out a friend to finish / complete his 24” Normandy SR2 for final release. I will try & help as much in correcting errors & finding alternative method in building this wonderful masterpiece of the Normandy SR – 2 from Mass effect 2.

I want to say to my mate Steve ( SJSquirrel ), my mind is blown away. Thank you for letting me be apart to build this beast of the SR-2. : )

Also I will soon post a thread here of my Larger version of a 78” Normandy SR-2 paper model from Mass Effect.

OK now, lets get back to the topic of Steve ( SJSquirrel ) paper model of his 24” Normandy SR-2 from Mass Effect.

Here comes the building stage :

Page 1 :

This is very straight forward & very easy to build on the front nose. I'm using Quill 600gsm card stock for the former Ribs. As you can see in the pic i start with the former ribs for F1 to F3. There are two parts of the skin to rap around the former ribs on F1 to F3. Part 1 & Part 2. You have a lot to play around with, when i comes to gluing the skin on the former ribs. As the former ribs are at 1mm thick. Thanks to Steve (
SJSquirrel ) model design. : )

Next comes former H2F1 to H2F3, basically the same way build process as from above but it gets more exciting. It has some Valley / Mountain fold lines in the skin to shape the structure of the former ribs. And lastly you have the first completed nose joined together in the last picture.

More build / pic to come. Stay tune. : )

More Pics

More pictures on test build ( Normandy SR2 ) on page 1 :

Next is former rib of H3F1 to H3F3 with the skin applied around the former ribs. The skin is part 7 , part 8 , part 9. Next after the skin is glued to the former ribs, there is a former ribs of H2-3 glued as a sandwich in between the front nose & the docking entrance. The Last pic you will see the front nose & the front docking entrance to the ship that is glued together.

More build / pic to come. Stay tune. : )

Beta-test build ( Normandy SR2 ) Page 2

Page 2 :

Next is middle front hull, this stage is a lot more gluing & patient to get everything true & straight. I start with the former first F1 to F6 & glue them to 1mm card stock, note : I'm using Quill XL 600gsm A3 White card stock. Which i find that i can get a lot more parts on one sheet. But the good thing is that for one packet of Quill XL 600gsm comes with 25 sheets. How great is that. This will last me a life time of building models. lol.

Next after cutting out the former ribs of F1 to F6 on page 2 that i glued on 1mm card stock, i get ready in assembling the former ribs & gluing each former ribs into there corresponding slots with there marking labeled. After i waited for the glue to dry on the former ribs, i started cutting out the bottom skin of part 1 on page 2. Now that part 1 is completely cut out it's ready to glue the bottom skin to the former ribs underneath.

Last pic is the final part to complete the hull. But this is the top skin of the inner structural skin. The outer skin will be added later in the build!.

I will be back soon, i'm off to watch the New Ghost Adventures & i'll be back to post more build / pic to come. Stay tune. : )

Beta-test build ( Normandy SR2 ) Skin adding

Here it comes the stage begins. Adding the inner skin & the outer skin on the middle front hull. As you can see the 5th picture is the texture sheet. All these texture skin sheets, all must be laminated to a card stock to make them a little thicker for details to the ship hull. I'm going to use Quill 600gsm as it's a perfect thickness to bring out the shape of the outer skin.

Note : I did come across one problem in applying the top texture skin. On the 8th picture, you will see two separate section of skin with the SR2 logo. In apply these two top texture skin it made the model uneven & the shape of the contour at the top looked unnatural to the rest of the hull section. On page 7, there are parts 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & page 8 of part 2, 3, 4, 5 of skin texture. That need to glue together in the center. This makes it more challenging to get these parts even & rounded shape to the hull, leaving open gaps if you don't apply enough glue in the center of the hull.

It might be better if the texture skin on page 7, part 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & page 8, part 2, 3, 4, 5 change to the shape on the last picture with the marking outline with red. It will make it more easier to align the skin in one go & carry on applying the rest of the skin.

More build / pic to come. Stay tune. : )

Beta-test build ( Normandy SR2 ) finishing off fuselarge

Now it's getting exciting to see it taking shape. So finally coming at the end of the Fuselage, i came across one problem if you take a look at the 3rd picture you will see there was two incorrect former ribs with wrong part numbers. But luckily this has been taken care of from the designer Steve ( SJSquirrel ).

Info :
As like all model builders out there the first thing before you start gluing your parts is to test fit the parts first, so you know that all parts fit correctly & you don't end up making a mistake or wrong part number on those parts.

Alternative method :

If you take a good look at picture 6 , 7 , 8 you will see that i'm using masking tape on the open slits to close them up. I find this method very easy to apply, than gluing paper strips. You will save time & problems in waiting for the glue to dry or having open gaps. Use this masking tape method on page 2 , 3 , 5 , 6 on the inner skins that has open slits, you will see how simple it is.

On last picture 9 & 10 you can see it's all sealed / closed up ready for the outer skin to be applied on top of the inner white skin. How awesome is that, we have finally reach at the back of the fuselage ship.

Stay tune for the complete fuselage with all skin texture applied. : )
