Very cool video. It's amazing the length they went to to restore the Enterprise. looks a little different now than the last time I saw it.

Thanks for the video! Brought back memories of laying on the floor watching mom & dads old Magnavox in the living room. Glad they put her back in 'space shape'.

Great video!
I liked the original series and is nice to see this process
The detailing is wonderful.

By the way: my whole life was a lie. I always thought the ship was white. But far from that, it is distinctly grey!!!
I suppose the idea of it being white, due to the fact that I used to see the series in a black/white TV, and that idea sticking deeply in the brain.

Fantastic video. It is like the restoration of an old car. The end result is simply stunning, would love to see it in the flesh. The most iconic spaceship there is.

That was a Pebble Beach level restoration. Originally it probably was not put together or detailed that precise.
Back then one of the favorite paints was Martin Senour light gray primer available at NAPA. Neutral gray that let you play with lighting and easy to use with the old optical printers. Also sealed plastics so you could spray lacquers on them. Plus had a great nozzle design that worked almost as good as an airbrush for spraying primer. Can't find it anymore in the Southwest.

A white Enterprise would not have photographed well.
They knew that a gray model would look "white" on tape.

However, over the years, with a number of repaints, the gray has gotten considerably darker
and the amount of "weathering" that has been added is too much in my opinion.
You can see in original photos that it was much less.
At least thats what I believe.

And "space weathering"?

LOL

I think enough time has passed...everyone knows about this project now...
I think its okay to reveal that 2...or was it 3?...years back,
when the Enterprise model was first pulled out of storage and into the restoration labs at the Udvar/Hazy Center,
I had the chance to see it while it was still in one piece.

Our own Anne McCombs gave a small group of us (papermodelers) a behind the scenes look at the restoration labs.
And I got an up close look at this model!
Unfortunately for me, we were asked to not take any photos at that time.
and we all gladly(reluctantly) obliged.

Its nice to see this model restored and on display again
however one thing I am not happy about is the completed left side of the model.
Originally, the left side was partially unfinished, and a bit rough looking.
Mounting points and wiring were visible on the left side.
Some details were not copied from the right side.
The model was mounted for filming only from the right hand side.
It was only ever photographed for the TV show from the right side.

I think it would be cool to see the model as it really was during filming.
With its mounting points, and wiring and studio look.

Other than that, they have done some great restoration and upgrades.
The lighting is amazing.
I can't wait to go back and visit the Museum again.

I agree about the original side, I have built Ron's enterprise that way a few times. space weathers from dust collisions might be an option, im not really sure. I like for the Jupiter 2, Klingon D-7, the enterprise, and a few others, a metallic purple silver. but there is no way to paint it like I perceive it on the screen, so just a drop of purple on slate grey is what I have settle with in the past. when I was 12 I used to ride my bike to kiddie world and look at the amt model hung up with pearlescent white hull. the nacelle domes were painted metallic gold. the windows were pale yellow. brass detailing and bright silvers and blacks. I think I was in love with that model.
