No worries Mike, it's great to see your build and to hear about the updated version.

Thanks Ron, coming from you that's a real honour. I hope I can continue to do your superb model justice .

Just printed out Mike's rework of Ron's excellent model, at (46%) err.. make that 42% (thanks Mike!) to give me a 1:1700 Enterprise. Some fiddly bits there, but it should come out superb. Going to be on vacation for a couple weeks and the weather doesn't look too great, so I'll likely have lots of time for modeling.

Hmm.. maybe I should add "looking forward to bad weather on a vacation" to the "You might be a card modeler if..." thread. :p

Shouldn't it have been 42%? The model is at about 1:710 scale, so a 46% print should give you 1:1540 or so, unless I'm too low on caffeine to do the math correctly ...

You are correct Mike, it is 42% give or take. Original model is 1:720 - 720/1700 = 0.4235. Fortunately my math is better than my memory. I did scale to 42%, not 46%.

Regarding the original and updated versions and which one to build, I think I'm gonna go with the original one - I kinda like the subdued graphics and think they suit the model well.

Does this look any better?!

A little more progress. The bridge assembly is (virtually) finished and almost ready to attach to the primary hull. For a smoother finish, I cut off most of the tabs here and either edge glued or cut my own joining strips:-

The parts for the upper primary hull are cut out and ready to go together:-

For those not familiar with this model, here is an example of the excellent instructions that come with it:-

I've been able to devote more time to this than usual this weekend, so a fair bit of progress has been made (for me anyway!).

The upper primary hull is now finished:-

As is the lower:-

I made a minor cock-up here. The instructions say to make the outer-but-one ring into a cone, which I did. Unfortunately I made it into a 'mountain' cone rather than a 'valley' one which was required. I guess I'm so used to building these things like that that I just didn't think. It wasn't until after I'd glued it all together that I realised, but fortunately I was able to coax the parts into the proper shape:-

All the support rings have been glued in place. I took a leaf out of Mike's book here and removed all the tabs and just edge glued them, so as to avoid any problems closing up the two halves of the hull afterwards:-

Fit of parts has been near perfect so far!
