Something I've used for an inexpensive source are a couple types of battery powered LED Christmas lights. The most common LED sizes are 3mm diameter and 5mm diameter. Some have a domed end to focus light forward and lately most used in holiday lights have an inverted cone end to throw more light sideways. Have used some of both flavors in various model railroad projects, even locomotive headlights.
LED of this nature typically run on 1.5 volts.
In the model railroad hobby there are various shapes, sizes, colors, of LED available down to things like 2mm square, flat, 'surface mount' types and various LED run on various voltages, but almost always less than 3 volts.
I'm not expert, just good enough to usually cobble together something functional and not burn up the table while soldering its wires.

The gun is turning out to be quite the challenge. The size is too small to do much with boxes and tubes. So I am now trying to simulate the 3D printing process. I have manually sliced the 3D model and printed these parts. Then I glue them together. Some a couple of times. Each of the two gun modules are actually 4 layers printed and glued. And then a couple of parts in between and on the outside.

I have coloured the assembly black but will do the next build grey, as almost all the details get lost in black.

So then, basically what we have here is a laminated laser.

I started the "final" build of the model and added the interior ribs. This is a shot in the build process. I have closed the model already and I am very impressed how much more sturdy the hull has become. It was quite sturdy before in the sense that it would not break or tear but of course you could press in the edges and then had to hope you were able to pop them back out again :-) This new version now is solid like a massive block.

In have prepared all the cutlines (you can see some of them on the white parts peeking through), if you want to build the interior, but I have not done the texture files for that yet. So this time I will build it like this but leave the door open in the end. In the view from top you won't be able to see the white interior. So in the end, there will be another "final" version built later :-) I just want to complete this first step very soon.
