visit a local hobby store like Hobby Lobby, or Michaels or Joann, and get their solid color cardstock(some really good deals can be had, last week, Joann has 12 for $2) and print on those, and no need to digitally paint the model, and then if you want to weather it, you can still do that with washes or pastels.

I just print on plain card stock, spray a couple of coats (in LIGHT layers) of sandable auto body primer and paint as if it's a normal plastic kit.
