Pyro GX from Descent 2 Game

One of my all-time favorite games, the Descent series, in all their incarnations... I recently got back to play this game in my WIN10 rig and checked for a paper model and found it on this forum. So I am posting pictures and comments on this build... it is already done but will start from the beginning.

Got to let everyone know that this is "officially" my first completed paper model... and instead of selecting an easy, one with tabs, I had to choose one with no instructions and that had to be "edge glued"... Challenge accepted! (I did read the PYRO GX thread on the forum as a guide during my build...)

So I started with the "easiest part...", the cockpit. Fairly easy. Then the upper "wings", they were a challenge but it worked out. One comment on the other thread was that once dry, the joints are "surprisingly strong"... that is true!

Lasers and Wings

This one is very different from the other versions I have seen on this forum and other blogs.

I decided to use launch lugs from my rocket stash to build up the lasers.

Also providing pictures of the wings for reference on those spikes.

All sub-assembly parts put together to start putting this thing together. Regarding the from top and bottom sections, my advice is to glue them to the rear section then fold the sides. Not like I did which was to have the lower side built up and the front section done before matching the top and bottom...

The engine part was easy, but noted that the "T" is weak and it bends easy, I would definitely wait to put these last.

I did re-enforced the rear section by placing a rectangular box inside. It helped to stabilize the rear section for when I glued the wings.

Check the completed ship. The missiles are a bear to make. I am working on them but may just leave them out. I added a few details to add some interesting touches (some panels, weapon scorch marks...) or to cover some "boo boos" I made along the build. I tried to cover up some of the folding edges by passing a pencil or a gray Crayola pencil, worked great. I finished it by spraying Krylon Satin clear to protect the model.

I did forget to tell that I printed the patterns on 110 white card stock at about 95% since my printer does not print to the edge. Used white Elmers glue to put this together.

The Pyro is very sturdy but the outer lasers kept breaking off so I used dowels and paper straws to add some internal structure from back to front in order to keep them in one piece.

Overall it was a great experience. Took me about 3 weeks to complete investing a little time here and there. I am planning (if it OK with the folks at the forum and the original designer) on retracing the patterns and add more details to the ship. Once done I can make it available to everyone. Will wait for the feedback before starting.

Decent, a classic in the late 90s Mac gaming community. Great looking build! .
