Panel modulation
I gave the model a base coat, then started doing a variation of panel modulation and postshading on the top of the model. My hope is that this adds to the pop of the panels when viewing from a distance.
The underside just uses some postshading using a greener / darker shade of red, the underside will be heavily weathered with oil streaks and battle damage, so I think this shading will help. The next steps will be to add a protective coat of varnish, then start on the engine parts, battle damage and insignia. Last edited by g0rb; 07-08-2019 at 12:54 AM. Reason: Add images |

Wow, that is gorgeous. It looks so good after just applying what is essentially the base coat. When the weathering, highlighting and shadowing is applied it'll be absolutely stunning.

Thank you Don, I am pretty happy with it too. Always a pleasure when something turns out the way you pictured it.

I completely agree, as this already looks impressive. I can not imagine what you have in mind, but it sure will be great.

Thanks Sergio & Whulsey!
What I have in mind is a well-worn and often used flying tank. So onto paint chipping: I used a sponge to apply bright orange "chips" to the upper hull, and brighter red chips to the lower hull (since it is darker). This took forever, so to get a better idea of the final look (I'm impatient like that) I decided to finish off one wing, by filling in the chips with a dark gray, and then adding exposed metal in the most work places. Here's a closeup of the flaperon and vtol fan: |

Your chipping work looks great in unforgiving macro zoom. It must be spectacular at 1X.

Cheers Don! I like the look of it too. At the moment I am just chipping the edges, but I am thinking of adding some mid-panel chipping, mostly streaks from the leading edges, as if shrapnel scraped past the plane at speed. Also some direct hits from enemy fire.
The hard part for me will be to find the fine line between too little and too much, and resisting the urge to not just copy the damage from left to right ie. make the damage symmetrical. It is sometime hard to keep things properly random |

It looks great Cris.Eso will be the hardest, find the point where say "until here is fine". But you will solve it very well.
